[Hardware] Building my own Clips controller

Post by julienb » Tue Apr 29, 2008 9:19 am

in order to share ideas, experiencies and concept, I add some links.

I'll build my own controller :
Image

the brain will be a Wiring Board. (http://wiring.org.co/hardware/index.html)

I'll use LED driver in order to control my rgb leds matrix. (one LED driver
the rgb led will be this one (I think): http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=105
More info about driving led here:
http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaB ... 1209311743

the buttons matrix isn't designed yet.

the piece of code (max+python) will be based on : http://groups.google.com/group/liveapi
I didn't modify the mdk stuff in order to drive led and receive button informations. I'll do it when I have more time... and a better skill...

I'll add info in this post each time I'll go further.

I already own encoders hardware.
it is only a clip trigger matrix as the title said.

perhaps, after that, one day, I'll decide to build a BIG controller with all-in-one...
but I'm not sure about that

Sounds interesting... I'll have to investigate that brain...

I was thinking about using RGB LEDs too, but they are so expensive. For your controller there, that'll be almost $90 in LEDs alone.

Was also wondering about the current budget for so many LEDs - are you USB-powering, or wall-wart powering.

Sorry for going off on such small details, but I was thinking about a design involving lots of rotary encoders with 11 LEDs per encoder (a la Midibox) and I ended up with over 700 LEDs (!) and no idea how I'm going to get the current to power them, let alone the cash. :)

I guess I'll use a particular current source.
any info soon.

Sounds like an ace idea :-) I still think ableton should move into hardware like NI did. I think they should mass produce Mr Henkes monodeck.

Ahh i can dream, Right back to reality :-) lol

As we debated here: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=
I still don't think it would be a good idea Ableton invests time in making an hardware controller.

are the leds independant of button ?
I mean, is there CC for button AND another for led ?
can it use OSC instead of midi (for further purpose) ?
RGB Leds ? (I need at least 3 colors for different clips informations)
I could add a list of questions with negative answer...

it doesn't fit with my thoughts.
but it seems to be a VERY pretty gear!

I've never seen the faderfox demonstrated, but from what I can(not) understand of their site, it does not do the same thing.

Yes.
I agree... only by reading features on the site.
I didn't watch a demo too.

I think they need a demo video.
I have never been able to take enough information from their text to inform me enough to make a purchase. My uninformed opinion is that it does not do what I need it to and I don't want to buy one just to see if I am wrong about that.

here's what I can glean from their site:

there are 3 groups of coloured buttons all with status leds
what do the status leds show? "their statuses" apparently. Is it 'clip slot filled' status, or what? Probably 'playing status'. But what if a slot is empty? who knows.

You can shift those 3x12 using coloured shift buttons at the top.
now something has happened, something mysterious.

that's what I know

it really doesn't fit with my ideas..
I want to build a gear with an "Open-source" idea/mind.

I'll put EVERYTHING I'll do on the net.
I love the open-source concept of board like arduino, wiring, and midibox..
