Experiencing audio extreme audio glitches in Vista!!
I recently purchased a Sony vaio vgn fz290 with 2 gigs of ram. I installed pro tools and im running it with an mbox 1. I know its primitive and shitty but it works fine on my pc running windows xp. For some reason though everything I record is all fucked up, glitches and audio dropping out as well as alot of static like hiss. Some one told me it was due to vista having a problem with m audio products. Can anyone confirm this is there anything I can do. This is really stunting my productivity as I usually record and practice guitar everywhere but home. Do you think the new service pack coming out soon will fix it?? Help is appreciated thanks in advance!

you have Vista and M Audio... that's like catching herpes symplex 12 while having AIDS.

make sure M-audio have a really recent driver - I was having a major headache with a FW410 on XP and they put out a new driver and cured it
there have been FW chipset problems with non TI chipset FW around the web, and I thought that was my trouble at first, but it worked under vista and the new driver solved it
make sure you use Aero graphics mode - I know that seems counter-intuitive but there is some kind of bug with Vista Basic mode and it throws the CPU load up by 20-30%
unfortunately in my experience, you will probably just have to wait for an updated M-Audio driver if you dont already have one - but make sure you report the problem to M-Audio
but I'm unsure what you're saying - it works fine with XP but not vista? are you dual booting? or do you only have vista on the new one? If SOny provides all the XP drivers I'd seriously consider installing XP, but beware on some of the newer ones that isnt a sure fire solution because as I said, at first XP gave me trouble with my FW410 - I guess because the hardware was newer and vista somehow dealt with it "better".
For audio XP is just more tried and tested and reliable once it is set up and working - some here have had good experiences with vista, so it does depend on your setup
but I found on some forums that people with the 'wrong' FW chipset (non TI) were buying PCMCIA>FW adapters to get their FW audio devices working
good luck!

I will defintely report the problem to m audio. What I meant about xp was that I have it running on my other pc and there isnt a problem accept that the comp is not as powerful. So I purchased the new computer in hopes of having all the power I needed, but low and behold I am unable to perform even the simplest tasks. Im freaking out here It seems I purchased a 1500 top of the line piece of shit, that is utterly useless for anything more than looking at porn. base your search on the devica manager in vista if you can't download it on sony site.
Most of the time, you can post on the company forum and request it too.

Lol that was the most dark, sadistic response I have ever seen in a forum or anywhere. Usually people dont enjoy dark humor, but I do and that was awesome! I have to admit I really felt like stabbing myself in the face when I couldnt get it to work properly, it will also randomly close ableton sometimes. The only program I have been able to run succesfully is FLSTUDIO, which I barely use now that I have AB7. Anyway I really dont know what to do. I would like to downgrade to xp if it is possible with my comp (Sony vaio vgn fz290). But then again I dont know if there are drivers available for it, im also afraid it will just crap out. I also wonder if the service pack thats supposed to come out might fix some of the problems with vista. I am hoping with updates everntually vista will be pretty good, is this a reasonable assumption?? It is after all the new windows it should eventually stabilize and get better. All this time I was hating on Apple cause I couldnt run adobe audition on a mac, now i hear the new audition is mac compatible! Is this true, that would really suck I probably would kill myself if this is true.. Wtf should I do,aside from call the suicide hotline???

Update on my problem, because I know you care.
I contacted Sony and asked if my comp model was capable of downgrading to xp. They said it wasnt possible, I who succesfully came close to doing it and their shit was all fucked up. Controls didnt work, some people's keyboard would not function. So I guess im stuck with vista for all eternity until death do us part! I'm going to try the service pack 1 I had previously tried the beta which didnt yield any result. I'll keep everyone posted, I know some other poor shmuck as my same problem. Die bill gates die!

op has an mbox, digidesign hardware, NOT m-audio. protools 7.4 supposedly works on vista. check digidesign website for drivers, which may or may not be there, the mbox is getting on with age...
