Poll: new drag/drop behaviour in 7.02 good or bad?
Poll: new drag/drop behaviour in 7.02 good or bad?
Hi all!
There's a bit of chatter about this in the bugs section but I thought it important enough to warrant a thread of its own.
In the latest 7.02 beta the following "improvement" is made:
"Dropping instruments onto tracks, pads or chains replaces the complete device chain and not only the previous instrument."
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=
To me and others, this is not an improvement, quite the opposite. Still, I can see merits to the new behaviour too, in some situations.
Making the behaviour an option is one suggestion, my personal suggestion would be to make this selectable by using a modifier key while drag/dropping. Like you could hold the Shift key down while dragging to get the new behaviour or something like that. (Actually, that could be a good thing when drag/dropping effects and all kinds of chains too.)
So what do you think? Should Ableton stick to the old behaviour or does everybody prefer the new one? Should it be a setting in the Options menu or selectable by a modifier key?

Nice one!, or just keep it as it is on 7.0.1slirak wrote: Making the behaviour an option is one suggestion, my personal suggestion would be to make this selectable by using a modifier key while drag/dropping. But please, DON'T change it to the new behaviour as it would kill *a lot of* people's workflow!

Is this a new bug?
Maybe I was a bit harsh with an abe employee on their weekend?

New drag drop behaviour
...er...why change something that works? But if pushed then give us a choice: modifier key. This is a bit like the whole snap-to-grid/grid visibility fiasco which took ages to get put right again and messed up workflow in the meantime. Please, Ableton, don't remove functionality, give us choice.
New drag drop behaviour
However, (and also as posssu notes (Bugs+Probs)) it seems that the way one drops a new instrument into the track IS the modifier: Drop new instrument directly onto old instrument only changes instrument not whole device chain. So no sweat then

That makes it bearable, yes.artworks wrote:However, (and also as posssu notes (Bugs+Probs)) it seems that the way one drops a new instrument into the track IS the modifier: Drop new instrument directly onto old instrument only changes instrument not whole device chain. So no sweat then
But I'm so used to the old behaviour, I'll probably delete carefully setup chains by accident a zillion times! So I'd still prefer the old behaviour or ultimately a choice by modifier key.
