Program to Disable Spacebar (Play,Stop)

Post by MrYellow » Mon Mar 15, 2004 12:04 pm

Thought I should post this here as well.

Wrote this program to disable the space key so that you don't accidentally hit stop mid-gig.

Let me know if you have any trouble with it.

nicework, yella. crap, i was juat trying to type with it on-definitely works. Now when I perform, I'll have six apps open at once (Live 3.0.2, FL 4.5, midi ox, bome's midi translator, DM2midi, and now blockspace). Thanks again. If ableton could give us midi mappable delete, and a way to block the space bar and fully edit all key assignments, I'd be down to four apps, though I've yet to have any troubles related to multiple apps other than making sure I open all of them up!

Sorry I've got 2 threads going with this in it... but the original question
was in the wishlist.

Just to reinterate.... If there are any other keys that need blocking or
popular remapping I can probably add them to this program and put out
another version.

Blockspace available somewhere?

Post by cbit » Sat Jan 21, 2006 1:22 pm

hi mr yellow

the dreaded accidental spacebar press happened to me at a show last night, ive read about your ingenious blockspace app but can't find any links to it that aren't dead.

could ableton provide hosting for this app? (since it corrects a serious problem with the design of their product after all:) )

if anyone could email the app to me or provide a link i would be very greatful!

info at red shift media dot com

I think it would be easier if they just allowed you to map the spacebar key in the key editor so you could just route it to an empty clip or something.

If you want to do this without using an external application that hogs resources, you can just enable the "EXT" button(external sync switch) on the top next to the metronome. You just have to make sure that you have midi sync enabled on a device in your preferences. Then you won't be able to use the space bar to stop your set, until you disable that button.

afaik this suggestion only applies if you're using an additional external device that is sending midi sync. I'm not :? (or am i mistaken?.. my external devices input list is empty in any case)

autohotkeys can also disable spacebar by mapping it to another funtion or mapping it to null. it also allows you to do all sorts of other cool tricks ...

Yep, forgot to post that one!
I added a 'disable spacebar" script to the hotkeys that I made.

BlockSpace takes a total of 2.5 MB of ram when running. Autohotkeys generally take about 3-4 MB of ram. Either is a good option, although AutoHotKeys tend to require some coding, whereas BlockSpace has just one simple function - to keep you from fucking up your set. I like BlockSpace because it has a single purpose, and it's very good at achieving that single purpose. My two cents.
