yep.. I think this could help me with composing big time..
you're right; even if such a feature will be implemented it will take a long time..
so that's why it's best to forget it for the time being..

Why does it have to be compressed? Why can't the part just be marked with a marker with an end and then you could just drag around the whole area from the start marker?
I find this compressing-part of this idea a bit weird, if the idea is to arrange more easily. Does it have to be "compressed" (=hidden) to be able to arrange better?
Also, I vote for Playlist to arrangement-mode. Just use a playlist to arrange your song: you could drag the playing order of your song's different parts and change it with one drag.

Then you're again stuck with moving the alternative parts around, stacking the stored ideas behind the actual song. The ability to "compress" or "hide" time in this manner, moving it around in that hidden form, and then "expanding" it at will at some position on the timeline, is in my opinion a great idea.

So when it's compressed, it wouldn't actually play? Oh, now I get it. Yea that sounds like a good idea! I think I'm not stuck anymore.

Great, and yeah, it's definitely an "oh, NOW I see it!" type of idea. When this is compared to juggling different alternative elements solely by copy/paste/drag/store on the timeline/fetch from the timeline/yadda... it's really understandable how it would enhance the arranging workflow.

exactly..
Think in this case action would speak louder than words..
If you could use this already in some sort of interactive way it would be more convincing and self explanatory..
But I'm glad at least some people like the idea..

yeah.. that's the idea!
a playlist solution is also nice (would make arrange non-linear as well)
but I would rather like to see it combined with a compress time feature..
the combo would definately liberate Arrange and be a big selling point..

yesterday I really wanted to compress a part on 1 track..
that could be very usefull as well,
instead of compressing time on multiple tracks only..

I would love to be able to do this with scenes. Here's what I'm thinking:
---------------------
sc1 repetitions: 2
sc2 repetitions: 4
sc1 repetitions: 1
sc3 repetitions: 4
arrange/ok
---------------------
There could also be other things like transpose, tempo, groove, fade in/out etc. in this list.

A global transpose button would also be a godsend. It sucks when you decide that you have to transpose everything 2 semitones down to make the bassline sound better.

just had a nice idea to make this feature even better..
what if you could drag the 'compress locator' into the browser,
Live would then save the compressed part as a new set with all associated files..
