Macbook C2D prompts for 10.4.9 update good move?

Post by Pasha » Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:45 am

I got a MacBook C2D I use Live and SampleTank.
Do you think upgrading to 10.4.9 is a good move?

Anyone?

Sounds like I'm the one. Just made a search on 10.4.9 and nothing popped up.
Anyone with some experience on the subject?

no problems with 10.4.9 here, though a lot of people are having issues with plugins, firewire audio, and system sleep. Proceed with caution.

Thanks!
Did you use software update or download from Apple site the combo install?

Thanks for reply.
I use the Mac not only for Live but also for other stuff.
I saw security improvements and other good things in 10.4.9 so I wanted to know if it could damage my already rock solid installation. I have no problems so far with 10.4.8.

Altough I didn't have any problems, several people had ones with 10.4.9. I'd suggest you to upgrade but to take these precautions: Use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make a disk image of your hard drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, you'll be able to get back. Also, don't upgrade via Software Update. Instead, download the COMBO updater from Apple website. Installing the delta updater (from Software Update), create a problem with any software protected with Pace (ProTools, Waves, MaxMSP, etc,).

Excuse my ignorance, is Live protected with Pace? Do you know if Sample tank is?

Live is not protected by Pace and I don't think SampleTank is.

I would wait. Really. I would just chill out and wait. That is another five minutes you could be doing something that won't potentially screw things up. You have a sick-ass computer, and a solid-built update. There has been 6 months of gravy thrown on top of this one as it is the last before Leopard. I would chill out.

OK. No more drinking and forum chatting.

I had a few plugins that were supposed to be affected by the upgrade but didn't see anything coming. I think it was one of the OhmForce plugs? Don't recall. I don't use Waves, heard that had some issues.

10.4.9 was pretty nice -- i heard they made Safari a bit snappier, and increased the volume on my MBP (same with iMac, Macbooks). I'm mainly looking forward to Leopard, though, and all the 64-bit apps :)

Actually you touched another point, Leopard.
If there are doubts about 10.4.9 that could be harmful, how can we be sure that Leopard when comes out will not screw our systems?
I have no experience in Mac OS X main release transitions so I might be wrong.

I think it's definitely a good idea to wait before installing Leopard, but an incremental update like .9 has much less changes.
