The AlphaTrack and Faderport are both really new. I was looking forward to the Faderport but they delayed it's release and the AlphaTrack looks like it's really beaten in it in terms of features (LCD Display feedback etc.) Sadly, "Frontier expects to start shipping AlphaTrack in January of 2007..."

Still worth waiting for if that's the form-factor (motorized long-throw fader) that you need.

Something a little different to consider, if a portable audio/midi interface with a couple of simple control elements on board suits you, is the Native Instruments Audio Kontrol. NI is a little iffy on the audio driver side - especially if you're a Mac User - but this box happened to be exactly what I was looking for. Ordered one last night.

P.S. The Tranzport is the only item you mentioned that's been out long enough to have proven itself. I know the cats over at the Cakewalk Sonar forum love them. They're pretty cheap, and I believe the only wireless one in the bunch. Wireless IMO is nice in the studio and a little sketchy on stage - I wouldn't want to count on wireless working in a room I'd never played before. So it depends on how you're planning on using it.

That iControl is insanely cheap, esp. at Sweetwater. I'm just concerned that it's got GarageBand branding all over it's product description. I'm not sure whether it's compatible with other products via plain ol' MIDI.

Hey Sebastian, happy to help. See if this link (at bottom) works for you. There have been several discussions at cakewalk.com about the Faderport vs. the AlphaTrack. The Alpha looks to be a little better thought out in terms of including an LCD display indicating of the state of the controller and the software it's talking to, so you know at a glance what's going on, and it's got some kind of cool assignable ribbon controller to let you work with multiple tracks more easily, or work with different params.

I'm pretty sure one of these threads includes a link to a demo video, too. All I know is all the DAW guys want one. I'm gonna try to make due with the Audio Kontrol for a while, since all I really needed was a desktop interface with a control knob on it.

Good luck, and keep the discussion going on the forum - I'll post this there as well - as others may have more to add.

For these items, you only need something that sends MIDI notes.
Your Karma Keyboard will do. Assign notes (write them down to remember). Done.

Other: drum pads, any effects pedal with multi switches should have a "controller" function.
For use by feet, check Yamaha, Behringer, etc.

Dedicated control surfaces do lots more but will do this easy.

My controllers are: any keyboard with "black and whites" (OASYS, Karma, K2500, etc)
Any keyboard with a controller surface on it, (K2500, KARMA, OASYS etc.)
One dedicated "real" controller, Korg microKontol.
Several single action foot switches (pedals).

Oops. . . forgot two MASSIVE controllers. . .RM1x and MC-909

Your KARMA has over 20 CCs and 61 "buttons" no setup except in LIVE!
Some may send sysex but are easily programmable and called up.
Too simple and too cheap?
