One Folder To Rule Them All (.asd Files)
One Folder To Rule Them All (.asd Files)
Small request...
I would like ableton to consider using one folder to store all the .asd files that Live creates. I am sure it is possible for references to be kept to the audio files, without having to have the .asd beside the aif/wav's.
If possible one asd folder could be used and kept with the decoding cache folder or similar location thats out of the way.
When the info is needed Live can look in the central folder for the referenced .asd and use it from there.
This would be Tidy.
Thanks.

While I don't wish they were always in one folder, I'd love the option to scan my hard drive and store BACKUPS of all the ASD files in one location. Easy enough to do with OS search string, but be nice if it was in app.

How about a preference option which allows users to decide whether they want all .asd to be stored in a folder or store with sampleTarekith wrote:While I don't wish they were always in one folder, I'd love the option to scan my hard drive and store BACKUPS of all the ASD files in one location. (We would need to have a choice so people who like them scattered all over the hard disk are happy too)
Any ideas how to work this ? I think its a valid request. But I obviously work a certain way, I need to know how this will effect other users.

I agree with this. When im in other software I get tired of seeing thousands of ASD files. When I frist started using live I dint realise that just listening was creating asd files. Their just a bit messy and an elegant solution would be nice.
Is there any way to hide them within the computer system on XP and mac?

So an option in preferences (Store with sample or in Global .asd folder) for default behaviour. (I'd get rid of the lot personally, put them all in a folder I cannot see, next to decoding cache)
And self-contain (Whatever its called now) would put all .asds into the project folder as well as audio files used for backing up, moving to another computer, etc.
What do you think?
Also as a dj (Who has not used Live yet 2 mix) how are .asd's stored and what do we need to take into account to keep djing sweet. Would the .asd go into the decoding cache folder when the mp3,etc is converted?
Thoughts..

Melodyne also stores analysis files as .mdd next to the sound file. If I open something in Melodyne I get 3 files for every file name!
Celemony do it too, so maybe this is the most organized way to do it? Storing them separately in one folder would be nice but that could get messy too:
How about when you rename a file? At least with the .asd file right there next to your file you can go ahead and rename that too, bam. If it's in another folder now you've got to go hunting for it so you can give it the new name so it will match up.
If you delete a sound file, it's easy to delete the .asd file right next to it. With them in a different folder you aren't going to want to waste the time sifting through them so you'll surely be left with lots of orphan .asd files in there.
If they programmed Live to delete or change the .asd file names automatically, that would help, but it would take some control away from the user & maybe it would not always guess correctly what you wanted to do or if the files belong together. Maybe you would want to replace a file with a new one and keep the previous .asd file. This would be confusing and difficult to do in that scenario.
Something to think about...
