when I short circuit my system I hear noises!!latency comp

hi I just started trying to solve the infamous latency compensation

but when I connect the output of my GNX4 to the input I get a stange noise from my monitors...and actually the "grey" meter that should replicate what happens on track 1 shows this background noise thus altering all the sense of the test

any idea?

I had the same problem when I tried on board sound cards (with both my desktop and laptop)- Connecting the output to the input just gave me HUMMmmmm

I now use an external card.
