How do you use Live

Post by Angstrom » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:26 pm

overly simplistic, because otherwise there would be 500 options

if you do like 10% of you time DJ ing .. kid, that doesn't count, because I do that and it counts as 'a laugh' . So use the percentages

Wait - does using Live as a performance tool = djing?

heh, I know it's a terrible selection of options.

But really it's in response to the spate of "Live should have more DJ features" and "there are lots of DAWs out there" kind of posts.

I probably could have formulated it better, but its a million degrees here and my brain cell is good for nothing today.

this is problematic, because what is dj ing? Features for DJ's who are just doing wedding style dj don't interest me, but features for dj's who are all about taking lots of pre existing material and putting it together to make something new does interest me.

That said, I don't dj, well, hardly ever, i'm certainly not a dj. To me, sound design is just too much fun to use pre existing material. Shit, i don't even use presets!

but i'm not anti-dj features because some come in handy for non dj's.

warping for instance, if you look at it at face value is a "dj" function. But when you look slightly deeper, you realize it's really open ended.

anyway to be fair, i'll answer the poll and check, DAW only, even though my real answer would be more:

75% performance
25% daw

I did start off making the poll be 'performance' = playing your own music possibly created in other apps, 'DJ' = playing other peoples music, 'DAW' creating your own music and not performing it.

but the option list looked a bit stupid

DJ 100% DAW 0% PERF 0%
DJ 80 % DAW 0% PERF 20%
DJ 60% DAW 0% PERF 40%
DJ 40% DAW 0% PERF 60%
DJ 0% DAW 0% PERF 100%
DJ 0% DAW 20% PERF 80%
DJ 0% DAW 40% PERF 60%
DJ 0% DAW 60% PERF 40%
DJ 0% DAW 80% PERF 20%
DJ 0% DAW 100% PERF 10%
DJ 20% DAW 80% PERF 0%
DJ 40% DAW 60% PERF 0%
DJ 60% DAW 40% PERF 0%
DJ 80% DAW 20% PERF 0%
DJ 60% DAW 20% PERF 20%
DJ 20% DAW 60% PERF 20%
DJ 20% DAW 20% PERF 60%
etc ... !!!!

why percentages

just list the main reasons for everyone to use live

performance
djing
daw
performance/djing
performance/daw
djing/daw
(performance/djing/daw)

I think it's a good question btw Angstrom!

Strictly beat making, time stretching and kicking it

When I'm bored, alone, depressed and in a sad state of self pity I'll dj some tracks I made or other people made

You can actually listen to something I put together www.myspace.com/teknolife <--- download the link under Frankie Wilde

but yeah - I just use it to make beats

Adonis

Beat making 98%

Djing 2%

I voted 50/50 since my studio-work is usually based around live manipulation of something or other...
