Cutouts in audio for 4-5 seconds OS X powerbook
hi roddi,
1. Machine you use
-->tiBook 867Mhz
2. MacOS Version
-->10.2.6
3. Amount of RAM you have
-->768Mb
4. "Size" of Live set used (e.g.: Number of clips, tracks, scenes, length of clips, Ram based clips, Number of effects, Which effects)
-->any combination
5. Audiointerface used (did you use inputs and outputs of different interfaces at the same time?)
-->internal audio only
6. anything else that could be of interest.
-->just an idea: maybe it's useful to record Live's output while waiting for this cutout, so that after it's occurrance it can be recunstructed if it was at the beginning of a clip's loop, if it's a "clean" cut (or if the waves before & after are affected), if automation was involved etc...
also if it's length is machine-dependant etc..
greetings,
jan

10.2.8, but the problem has been present since 10.1

no clips, just 3 channels receiving audio thru the live inputs from a hardware mixer. each channel has 1 effect inserted. each channel has it's i/o assigned to a different i/o on an rme multiface.
> 5. Audiointerface used (did you use inputs and outputs of different interfaces at the same time?)
rme multiface. but problem has also occurred using the internal tibook out.
> 6. anything else that could be of interest.
i have tried all obvious solutions, energy settings, network settings, hd defrag, seperate user account for live, etc. i do not use clips, and the cpu my sets use is around 20, 25%. the suggestion that the problem must be "living at the thin connection patch between live's output and core's input" sounds logical to me. another clue might be: since i use live just for fx, i sometimes run it without the sequencer running. i have never had a dropout when the sequencer was stopped, and live was just processing audio. however sometimes i need to hit start just to sync delays to a new tempo, and then when i leave it running for a while i do get the dropouts.
hope this is of any help.

heres something odd,
the drop outs seem to occurr more quickly if you use a mixture of bit rates in your samples / clips, which got me thinking.....
i've run the same basic set 14 channels of a mixture of long and short clips
using only 16bit wav ,only 24 bitwav versions and a mixture of 16 and 24 bit
the 16 and 24 mixture versions started to cause the drop-outs first,
and the single bit rate versions both approx after the same amount of time.
this might give someone techy some help in deciphering the problem.
I must add that I've been using Live on stage at gigs and festivals without any major problems until now, and it still hasn't happened during a gig (luckily), and only time it has occurred was when using the software for pro-longed editing of single sets during rehersals for the tour.

thanks for the hint. This is greatly appreciated

Hi People,
just to let you know:
We had two guys from Apple/Cupertino here yesterday and we pretty much figured out, what is going wrong. Since it seems to be quite tricky to solve, I cannot promise you *when* we have a fix ready. I can promise you though we *will* fix it. Definately!
Thanks for your patience

No they were on their once-a-year "visit the Europe developers"-tour. Good for us it was just the right time...pharmakonMtl wrote:

Since it is not yet 100% clear whom to blame (us or them) I wont comment in detail on that.
Only so much: it has to do with priority inversion during page faults...

it all boils down to timing, doesn't it...Ruotger Skupin wrote:No they were on their once-a-year "visit the Europe developers"-tour. Good for us it was just the right time...pharmakonMtl wrote:

thanks pharmakonMtl... I'll try that. For a while Live was actually playing samples backwards.
By the way, this is my Dolorian:

Well Roddi, as soon as you guys get that bug fixed, you know where we are!
