hmm. here it doesnt seem to matter what length the audio clip is.. also long clips give the same effect (tested with a clip with length 142:1:2).
(ay! turns out updating my video drivers seems like a involved process, i won't be doing it today)

just tested the live demo on my work machine:
WinXP pro SP2
Pentium(r) 4 2.66GHz, 1GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
Same result. very jerky on zooming in (although i noticed i had to place a few more small 1/512 clips to get the jerkiness jerking than on my home laptop)

I got an email reply about the slowness, and whether it was likely to be improved in v6:
ableton support said: "This behaviour is on our top priority list, but is not that easy to "fix", as it is not a single bug. Things are improving, but it is still too early to talk about the final behaviour in Live 6."
