FYI, Audiopad canbe used as a generic midi controller and is not tied in to the compositional tool ... some excerpt of my email exchange :

Mmm, from the video, I guess you guys are my generic off-the-hook max-msp wizards ... ;-)

And the audiopad I understand as a big multi-point controllable xy-pad that is as powerfull as the extend you can midi-customise the application you use it within ? [Correct me if I'm wrong ]

Wicked nevertheless ...

We do use the audiopad as an XY controller, but the tracking data goes into software written from scratch before it goes to the MIDI layer, so that gives some flexibility.

If you wanted to build something along these lines, your best bets are to use a large Wacom Intuous tablet as your hardware. Or, you could use a camera to track objects on a table... that is much cheaper but harder to do.

Unfortunately I can't give you any software due to IP restrictions in my lab.
Here is an example of another application of the same technology:

This paper will give more implementation hints:

I watched the demo video and i have three comments:

1) holy shit.
2) i'd rather try that than ride the 'segway human transporter'
3) ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 23rd century.

[way, way, way off topic]

I like the reviewer who said that "Minority Report" is proof that Tom Cruise can't act in the future, either.

Looks fantastic! My only reservations are that I don't think you would get nearly as cool results if you tried using their hardware interface without their software. And also... the tempo control is just too goofy... would definitely change that. Anyway, it's fricking gorgeous to behold.

from the audiopad "manual" :

"We are currently using Ableton’s Live™[1] software as Audiopad’s
musical back end."

I've tried it at the Sonar festival 2003 and I must say that, for those who loves to physically manipulates sounds, it is "orgasmic", but, when you really look at that machines, you think that the price must be incredible
