Can Live send a program change to an external device?

Post by Tim York » Sun Apr 02, 2006 10:07 am

ie can Live send/receive midi to/from external sound modules?

I want to set up a program change at a certain point in a song, in order to change patches on my V Drum kit.

Is this possible?

And..there's no event editor for midi, is there?

Hi Tim,

If you double-click on any MIDI clip to open the clip view, in the Notes section, there are fields to enter MIDI Bank, Sub-Bank and Program numbers. This program change will be sent when the clip is triggered. You can always create a "dummy" MIDI clip without any notes in it by double-clicking an empty Session View slot.

And yeah nah, there is no MIDI event list editor, just the piano roll.
You have Logic though Tim? Its still the ne plus ultra of MIDI sequencing IMHO.

cheers and hope this helps!

what is the latency like for triggering program changes with a MIDI clip to an external device?

what are people's experience with this aspect of using Live to do this?

Depends on the latency of your hardware device and midi setup really. Hasn't been too bad for me, I have clips trigger my guitar patch changes to coincide with scene changes. BTW, nice to meet you in Frankfurt Robtronik --

yes, likewise! :) I'll send you an email when I get back in the states with all my contact info.

I was thinking of using Live to trigger all my synths in a, er (duh!) live context and didn't know if I should expect the synth to trigger its last patch sound for a quick milisecond before it switched to the new sound patch.

Specifically, I want to use it to trigger patches from an Alesis Micron Synth. :)

I'll check that out when I get home I think.

I am having some difficulties setting this up. I am trying to set up my an200 and I am assuming that the msb = bank, lsb = sub-bank, and the program is what you want, is that correct? I am just not getting any results. Thanks

THANKYOU Pitch Black!

This solves a problem that has had me pulling my hair out for over a year.

Like all things in Live, once you see it, it is blindingly obvious.

Cheers
