how would you define breakbeat?
how would you define breakbeat?
hi...
what are breakbeats?
are these simply just beats you can 'breakdance' to?
are they just simply a part in a song where there are no other instruments, just percussion....like a drum solo?
are they simply just the drums sampled in rap music?
fill me in

funk and wagnalls
technically speaking, it comes from funk, where the song would "break down" to just drums and percussion. Here the drummer would keep a minimal groove going or wind out into a whole drum solo.Cos there aren't as many other instruments in the mix, this is what everybody points their samplers to....

origins of the 'broken beat"
I'm lead to beleive that it's generally accepted first breakbeat was played by James Brown's drummer. 'Funky Drummer' is one if not the most sampled drum beat in history. Yes, it features a drum break and it began in early funk, but the 'broken beat' term came from this particular style of drumming where the drummier would shift the accent of the beat, ' breaking' the bar up into unequal parts, thus making it sound 'broken'.
I'll second that! Clyde "the glide" Stubblefield is still touring with the "Masters of Groove" (with Grant Green Jr. on guitar and Rueben Wilson on the B-3) He plays his ass off. Go catch him if you see them pass through your town.Anonymous wrote:
