Basic Production Advice
Basic Production Advice
I'm just making my first tentative steps into music production, can you guys recommend any good books to read which cover off much of the basic terminology? I'm at the 'Music Production For Dummies' level so I need something pretty basic.
Cheers!

I would head over to SoundonSound.com and just start reading everythign you can. They post their backissues that are at least 6 months old on the website, so you have a huge resource of well written articles to get you started. Additionally, I think Computer Music magazine out of the UK includes a beginners section in each issue, at least they used to. I haven't bought it in awhile.

I think the Dance Music Manual is an excellent source for music production. Aimed at dance music obviously, it still covers a lot of material that is universially applicable:

Check out the reviews at the bottom of the page. It has eleven reviews, every one of them a five-star!

www.computermusic.co.uk is great too. grab a magazine at your local bookstore and you get a dvd full of samples and free software!
i learned a shit ton from that mag cuz my friend had a subscription while i was staying at his house. after work i would scour the back issues for info and tips. learned a lot!

I will add my voice to that as well. It is very well written at an approachable level of tech speak but it also gets very granular. It is waaay more useful than just a dance music book too. Mine is already losing it's pages.supster wrote:Michael-SW wrote:I think the Dance Music Manual is an excellent source for music production. I was so inspired by all the enthused ravings about the Dance Music Manual that I immediately ordered it from Amazon (should have it within 2 days).
I had seen the title before but I did not take it seriously until I read the rave reviews and then went to the website and saw the table of contents.
Will let you know what I think.
Again thanks for tip on that one!
