External hard drives

Has anyone made their own, getting a firewire case and putting an IDE drive in it? Is it worth trying that, or is buying a prefab hd the way to go, such as this:http://www.zeehoo.com/miva/merchant.mv? ... ry_Code=HD)?[/url]

hi,
ive been using an external firewire drive for about half a year. It's kool but I also had lots of trouble with it, like suddely getting a write io error message during a gig. Things only got better when I upgraded to win xp.

I use a 12GB 2.5" hard drive I threw into a firewire housing, and I haven't had any problems with it. I usually use it on my TiBook, I only hook it up to my XP box as an alternative to copying stuff over the network.

I got an 80gb firewire harddrive. I store all my sounds, samples, masters on it and run only applications on my actual machine. I love it personally.

geargasm: You mean there aren't little gnomes inside my laptop?! Are the 7200rpm models too hot to run inside a laptop? I was thinking of getting a 60-80gb model to keep all my audio files, as ghostbeats has done.

Anyone know if there are cases that do firewire and usb 1.1? My pc at work has no firewire port, and I'd like to be able to bring my hd to transport audio to edit, etc.

the maxtor dv5000 has ilink and usb2.0 ... i use the 120GB version...costs around 250€

I think firewire is the better interface for harddisks, because you can have larger packet sizes and the software drivers are better. Its a little bit of a serial scsi I guess.

Has anyone had that problem of mine, that the harddisk works for some time (an hour or so) and suddenly is reported as being removed by windows? Problem wont be fixed by switching the harddisk on and off. Cable, drivers etc. are ok.

I use a Sony Vaio, some noname firewire to ide box and an ibm 5800 rpm (maybe faster) 60 gig hd. I have had the same problem if I plug my 80 gig backup hd into the box. So I guess the harddisk itself is physically ok. I tried changing the firewire to ide box, which also didnt help. Problem with the Sony firewire interface?

Hi I bourt a external case kit from http://www.datafab.com/
it has both USB 2/1 and Firewire
and put a WD 120 gig drive in it
so far so good ....

also i have had the drive sudenly disconect but only when i turn the small
fan in my room off/on must disrup the power flow to the device
so id recomend a UPS, its a very good idear any how

personly i dont take it to gigs i dump every thing on the laptop HD
if somthing happend to that drive at a gig (droped/beer/kiked/overheat)
id loose the plot
