Use sound from .avi video in ableton

hello,

how would you record sound from an .avi video to use it within ableton live? any ideas anyone?
i have an external soundcard (terratec phase 26 usb), and the internal of my notebook, maybe record the output of one into the other? but how? or can you recommend any software which would be able to extract the sound directly?

Get a 30day-demo of 'Vegas Video' (or similar), load the avi and export the soundtrack.

try audacity if you're on pc. it can directly record the output of your video card in real time.... except for copy protected dvd's i think.

Get yourself VirtualDubMod (http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/) and set it up. VirtualDubMod should be able to open any .AVI file that is playable on your system, also DVD VOB files.

Open your AVI file. Play until the beginning of where you want your sample. Press Home key to set the in-point. Press End key to set the out-point.

Go to Streams menu, select Stream list. Right-click on the audio stream. Select full processing mode. Check if you need to convert sample rates (eg from 48khz to 44.1khz). Leave compression to none (you just want an uncompressed .WAV). Click the save .WAV button. The resulting file should be playable in Ableton.

VirtualDubMod will read .VOB files from DVDs as well. The process is the same. Use a DVD ripper to get the files from the DVD on to your hard drive - or if encryption is not an issue, open the files directly in Vdubmod.

If the DVD (or AVI file) is using AC3 sound, you will need to have an AC3 codec installed, however, after that Vdubmod will do all the conversion. A good free AC3 decoder is the open source AC3Filter (http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/) - google for newer versions or look here http://www.free-codecs.com/AC3_Filter_download.htm.

Vdubmod will remember the audio extraction settings, so you can just keep setting in and out points, and hitting save .WAV button.

One slight correction: you need to install AC3ACM (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/) in order to read AC3 audio in VirtualDub. It's free, and easy to install.

With that you can also extract .WAV samples from DVDs.

Just to add that for DVD, you can use DVD audioripper.

But virtualdub is great for .avi!
