What would be the main advantage(s) for 64 bit?

Post by johnnyvn » Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:56 pm

Sorry for the dumb question.

What will be the main advantage(s) by going to 64 bit? Would it be speed of use? Less latency? Better sound quality?

Thanks in advance...I see a lot of talk about 64 bit but I'm not sure what the main benefits would be...

32 bit OSes have a memory addressing limit around 2 gigabytes, it can be a little higher (EG 3gb), but essentially the issue is - it's not enough for use with large sample libraries and plugins with hefty memory requirements. When you hit the memory limit of the OS, everything turns to shit and crashes start to happen.

64 bit OSes have a much higher memory limit, it varies depending on what platform you are one, but "much higher" covers the basics. This means you can safely use a giant orchestra sample library with 100 loopers and a bank of IR reverbs and be more sure that you won't hit the dreaded "out of memory" warning.

1. It enables you to use the processing power of a 64-bit system.
2. More efficient useage of memory intensive tasks, and unlikely to get "out of memory" crashes.
3. Ability to use 64-bit plugins 8) , and not having to download both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
4. Currently they are behind the other major DAW's by running only native 32-bit

But, it won't necessarily improve the audio quality of the sound.
I think Ableton are on the case, but it looks like a major rewrite of the software as it's taking ages.

No I think the general public believes that 64 bit will allow them to access as much ram as they want. And they are correct. They believe it will allow them to bounce down less of their ram hungry isntruments and generally worry less about the current relatively low ram limit.

I think people believed that 64 bit audio would help them make better sounding music, which is of course generally nonsense. 64 bit application is much more beneficial.

What they said, plus multithreading (better/more efficient handling of multiple simultaneous tasks on multi-core processors).

64 bit will make your music sound better. It will give it more bass and treble, and make your music sound like a finished master without adding any effects whatsoever. It also increases creativity so that you don't even have to have talent in order to produce. Basically, it's the Holy Grail of digital music production.

64 bits will make you a cup of coffee and a sandwich while you compose too.

You can also create the perfect woman. All you have to do is input the parameters you want.

if you ever get a window in live like "out of memory".. and live crashed.. & you have a 64bit window or mac system and mor than 3,5 gb ram you don't get this window again.. hopefully for a very long time.
and pretty well your instruments can use more calculating power.."ram" so they can use bigger informations like used in reverbs.
your ram range gets dramatically bigger and thats the most wanted i think.

just wanted to rewire live to my 64bit cubase to combine some projects (do this very seldomly) - i think i have to wait until live is x64 to get this to work..

not a main advantage point you are looking for, but , as i stumbled upon this today, i thought i would chime in a little:P

all plugs i use are 64bit capable.. at this point i install 2 versions.. 32 and 64 bit versions of the plugs.. 64bit live would allow me to delete the 32 bit versions..

main advantage : more ram use.

oh, and what kb420 said :P

Considering I have 32GB of RAM, a 64 bit version of Live would be VERY WELCOME! :)

I can only assume most of dickish answers are from people who aren't heavy softsynth users. For everyone else , 64 bit is the answer to years of "Out of memory" errors when they have the audacity to use too many VSTi. Try using 8 Omnispheres plus a fully loaded Kontakt and multiple instances of Nexus and Amplitube.
It's a fucking joke that this is still out of reach when my computer has 10gb RAM and 8 cores.
Mac Pro
Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2 x 2.8 GHz
10 GB RAM
OSX 10.5.6

get a large portion of whiny ass posters to stfu.

worked with the Live 7 64 bit summing engine. "Sonar has it, why doesn't Live?"
