Girls and Electronic Music....

Post by mholloway » Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:10 pm

I know many who love listening to it, but how come so few create it? What historical/societal/cultural factors+biases have resulted in this sad reality that electronic music, like film directing, is so wholly the domain of men and not women, with the exceptions being so few and far between....

It's seems like a whole side of the picture, a voice if you will, is missing from the panorama.....I think of amazing female-based bands like Coco Rosie and wonder what feminine-particular influence/direction/idea could be going on in electronic music that isn't there yet. And I mean more, far more, than just having house music with female fronted vocals. I mean on the sound design, composition, production level....

anyway. rainy oregon days make me ponder random shit.

Surely this applies to pretty much all music?

it's all about evolution, innit. They're designed to receive our baby batter and gestate babies in their bellies, and then feed those babies. And their brains are designed to seek out dudes possessing the best goo to have injected up their baby chute.

Where as dudes have evolved to attract women with our awesome skills.

...girls are more realistic than dudes...basically...from my humble experience
they KNOW that 99% of the time.. there's no $ in music.

I'd agree with the evolutionary argument.

You must not be hearing the same women that I am hearing. Also, I happen to be a woman who can wipe the floor with 99% of the male DJs I have ever heard.

But I digress.

This xkcd comic has always said it all for me. Extrapolate "math" to "DJing/Production" and you have one of the key problems we deal with.

Image

If a guy sucks at DJing, he just sucks at DJing. If a girl sucks at it, then ALL girls suck at it.

Logical? Not really. Based in a pervasive sexism that still lurks in the creative world (even when so many want to think that somehow creative people are more enlightened)? Yup.

Take a look at some of the previous responses, and perhaps you might find a reason why fewer women get involved on a DJing/production level. Those of us who choose to despite the rampant idiocy, have all dealt with the bullshit.
