LIVE 4 PERFORMANCE TEST
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter = 25%
2) Laptop/Desktop? = Laptop, Toshiba satellite M30
3) Operating System = Windows XP
4) CPU Make Model and Speed = Pentium M 1.7
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram = 512 mb
6) Soundcard = M-Audio firewire 410 (set on 44.1, Asio)
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed = 4200rpm
Thinking of using a usb2.0 external drive for audio even tho current one is remarkably sufficient, anyone else using usb 2.0 drives?

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter = 43-50%
2) Laptop/Desktop? = Laptop, Apple Powerbook 17
3) Operating System = 10.3.5
4) CPU Make Model and Speed = 1.5ghz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram = 1GB DDR SDRAM PC2700
6) Soundcard = Stock internal
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed = 5400RPM
NOTE MAC USERS: Please check before you test that the Energy Saver settings under System Prefererences/Energy Saver/Options/Processor peformance are optimized. This needs to be set to HIGHEST for any OSX laptop to give a realistic result. This laptop struggled at 88% with setting on: Automatic or Reduced and 43% with Highest. Still too slow IMO, apple need to release a G5 laptop, or ableton could make Live perform better on mac?
Thanks

7) Hard Disk Drive Speed = 7200rpm
and another setting:
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter = 32%
2) Laptop/Desktop? = Desktop
3) Operating System = Windows XP SP2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed = Athlon XP2400
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram = 512 mb DDR / 333
6) Soundcard = STAudio DSP24 MKII (set on 44.1, Asio, 48 samples per second = 4ms latency) (latest ESI drivers)
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed = 7200rpm
and the other pc
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter = 37%
2) Laptop/Desktop? = Laptop, Dell Inspiron 8200

In Logic Audio I can even open 58 Platinum verbs on 5 tracks...Never reached that before...MusicXP.net settings...that helped and SP2 increased performance a bit too
thats it.
by the way. i am selling this soundcard (Hoontech StAudio DSP24 MKII, for MAC and PC). you can check it out on http://www.staudio.com/products/dsp24mkii.html
i would like to have 120 € for it.
(reason: quitting desktop, jumping on laptop)

I think it's a mixture of both, but if you compare Logic Pro performance you get A LOT more milage out of it than with Live 4.Keyboard wrote:Still too slow IMO, apple need to release a G5 laptop, or ableton could make Live perform better on mac?
Thanks
I fully suspect the new iMac is some kind of indication as to what to expect with a G5 Powerbook. Obviously it's still too big to be a Powerbook, but Apple is proving the technology can be squashed and I'm sure they are developing it now.

Indeed - however, it looks like a dual-core G4 might be in the works while IBM takes their time ironing out the mobile G5.Per Boysen wrote: "No G5 PowerBooks Anytime Soon"

It would feature an onboard memory controller a'la Athlon 64, a much faster system bus, and frequencies upwards of 2ghz. It may be the best option for Apple anyways, as we are still very much living in a 32-bit world.

*note, had to use 44ms for this test due to the sound card crapping out with anything below this.
do you use asio4all? - my soundcard is a realtek and it runs at 2ms
I'm installing sp2 sometime today, I'll keep you posted.AdamJay wrote:spacerboy and amberience seem to be getting very good results with Athlon XP's at 2600 and 2400. One thing in common - they are both running XP SP2. I wonder if thats a factor.
either of you care to comment on any noticable performance boosts since updating to SP2 ?
