TIP: Syncing loops in simpler

Post by Machinate » Fri Aug 27, 2004 8:08 am

Okay, this is a dirty, lofi version of a temposynced simpler instrument.

Load up something with a lot of rhythmic content as well as tonal.
Turn loop on.
Set start to 50%, which will allow you to modulate it fully.
The loop parameter should be set to around 50-60% for the smoothest results.
Length should be somewhere between 1-5%, and fade to 100%.
If you press a key and listen now, it should sound like a soft buzz. But try turning the start knob. This is your basic granular timestretch. And the trick is that this can easily be synced to your project tempo:

Reset the start knob to 50%. Now, make a new midi clip for the simpler instrument. Draw an envelope for the start parameter the same length as you want your loop to be, ie 1 or two bars or whatever. Simply draw the envelope from -50% to +50% in a simple ramp.

Press play.

Every sound you play should now be in sync with the project. It can do amazing things to a drumbeat as well.

Have fun :)

Nice Iv'e been wanting a key follow function for time on simpler for ages this will do good effort. I suggest duplicating the midi signal used to trigger simpler using a midi yoke then using that to retrigger the clip with the sample start automation then simpler will allways trigger from the start, don't forget to set the clips quantize to none,

Nice.

Have you noticed that if you now shorten the length really close to zero, it gives you a flanger-ish effect?

Oooh, I've been necro-bumped!

Now, this is the kind of stuff Robert Henke was doing with the new Sampler... Although this original post is now two years old :)

do you happen to know how to do this in sampler?

as far as i know, you would have to do this with the auxillery envelope in sampler... what you would have to do set a small region to loop, turn up the fade to taster, and set the parameters loop start and loop end in the envelope. make sure the attack is matched with the length of the loop... you will have to calculate this for the BPM of your track... im not by a computer right now to test it, but it should work...

the start knob doesn't go to -50% in Simpler, I'm confused. sorry to rehash an old topic but it seems relevant. thanks.

He's talking about a 'modulation envelope' in a clip.

Today there is either the mod envelope or the automation envelope.

The mod envelope is relative to where you set a knob parameter at. So if it is at 50% and you modulate -50 and +50, it will go from zero to 100%. (And show an orange movement on the parameter itself)

With the automation knob, the knob itself will automate. In that case, you'd probably want to automate it to go from 0 to 100.

To access either of these, I think you can just right click the knob you want to write an automation for.

Keep in mind that this technique also can rely on loop length. If you have a 1 bar loop, you would make the ramped automation for the duration of 1 bar. If the loop you dragged into simpler is 4 bars, then you draw an automated 4 bar ramp.
