my fiance Vj's.

she uses Resolume 2 ( but just recently got Resolume 3) as well as a Kaoss Entrancer.
Also has Ms Pinky, but hasn't quite explored it fully yet.
We did this gig recently where I used Ableton to VJamm style some video clips.
with Live's warping features for video, it works like a charm.

check this site out:

click on live@armchair

she's part of this band I play in called Closet Snare.
it's a little epk style clip to showcase the band (so there are aspects of the gig).

You won't see her in the clip, as she's operating from the sound desk area,
but most often these days, she's onstage with the band.

I use Blender 3D for making the content and resilume to mix as im in windows, but when i switch to mac i think ill use vdmx as it seems to me the most versatile.

I am also learning processing.

Resolume (2 or 3) for mixing; VJamm for AV clip triggering. Resolume 3 (Avenue) is pretty sweet for AV mashups!

I use ableton to send midi information through to arkaos.

Arkaos has thousands of still images loaded in, which are displayed and sequenced in time with whatever happens in live...

very hypnotic.
MBP 2.4 & a shit load of Faderfoxes!

If you're on Windows, Resolume is great.
On Mac, Module8 is definitely very strong.

Our events (www.wearerobots.ca) use 2400x600 resolution (4:1) visuals and the above software is capable of outputting these formats (with a config file tweak on Resolume) - and any other custom formats.

Resolume is also nice as it is able to handle flash movies and you can also program it to manipulate the flash movie layers.

I used to vj a lot about 8 years ago and used hardware and video mixers and my stuff worked playing by hand rather than midi synced. These days I produce video work for major tour visuals typically using after effects but I'm working more often in animated commercials now. Ableton still gets used in nearly every project though.

I've had a lot of fun playing with opentzt, which supports plugins, and is free. It is quirky, but very powerful.

Has anyone seen the DJ Food & DK (Ninja Tune) gig?
very cool to hear (and see).
saw them last year and was also able to sit in on a workshop.
They're basically DJ'ing mpeg clips as opposed to just DJ'ing music and sound clips.
e.g. when you hear Jimi hendrix wailing over a phat beat, you'll see a clip of him dropping in and out over the phat beat (which has it's own assigned video).
They also customise video clips to go along with some tracks (which makes it more
abstract and interesting).

If I can remember correctly, Serato is being used to launch the video clips.
Was really nice to see such a tight integration with sound and picture,
cos usually the VJ spends the evening reacting to the music.

I use livid union and the ohm. I also use module8 with my ohm for multi-screen. Looking forward to a more friendly use of video with live for max!

How good is opentzt ? Can it be compared with Max/msp, processing, VVVV, or pure data ?

Is it just for mixing video or does it do interactive and generative stuff ?

Thanx !

vjing

Post by sburke1 » Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:58 pm

I just got into vjing. I prepare/warp clips in live and bounce them, then Import into resolume. Anybody else doing this?

There are a lot of new issues to deal with when you use video and I think we can help eachother. Resolume wants videos and wavs separate. When i bounce video out of ableton, even if I uncheck "sound" in the video settings I still get sound. So i mute the track. But i dont know if this is ideal because resolume still might see that audio content even though it is muted and this leads to shaky audio. Anybody else warping clips and bouncing into resolume?

I use Live and arkaos to create lightsculptures. I create almost all of my visuals in after effects. Live functions as a sequencer and audio analyzer host. But I plan to redesign everything in Max/msp. I've just finished the audio to cc message part in max, including network support.
