people, "best" does not mean "favorite." so, seriously, there's maybe 5-10 legit contenders. question is also limited to bands, but i assume individuals count. best seemingly has to include more than just a few records (knocking out nirvana), likely requires recognition by both critics and fans, etc.

so you can make a case for U2, stevie, prince, maybe radiohead, etc. you are, however, not really going to be able to dispute someone who votes beatles. not only the best pure songwriters, the best production, some of the best voices, but groundbreaking, all done in a very short amount of time, incredible variety, and insanely popular. you can say you don't personally like the beatles, but you can't really say they're not great.

the Beatles are the best band of all time. if you don't get their genius start learning to play their songs. McCartney with amazing harmonization and chord structure, very lyrical, Lennon with his one chord rock/blues vamps.

the better question is who's the 2nd best band ever?

Bob Marley is up there for me, I love his entire catalog and I have hours and hours of it.

now my annoying list of every band I love, err most of them (I hate it when people do this, but whatever...)

Pink Floyd

Metallica - I like metal but putting on early metallica has a sound and edge that blows every other band out of the water.

Tarekith - early pumpkins, FUCK YEAH!!! but I'm not even interested in hearing their new shit, BORING. that's a band whose albums got progressively worse, nothing after Adore is worthwhile. If Corgan died after MCIS they'd be a different story.

Foo Fighters fucking RAWK!!! Dave Grohl is an amazing musician and by all accounts a helluva nice guy. FANFUCKINGTASTIC live shows, seen them many times. on the note I have to shout out to Weezer. Nirvana also had GREAT output while they were around.
*lots of cool Dave Grohl clips on youtube.

Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pixies, The Police, Simon and Garfunkel, the Smiths, Tom Waits, Hendrix, Underworld

i agree with the beatles (especially the part about harmonizing) but what about jimi hendrix?!?!? then again, nobody said anything about aliens being allowed on the list. he is the epitome of an innovator.

Thread-jack: What would the Beatles have done if Live was available at:

1. White Album?
2. Sgt. Pepper?

they'd probably sound the same. I wonder how much of the techniques they did on those albums were an influence on how Live was designed. Could that be abstracted?

IMO Abbey Road is their best album. ;) The last to be recorded too. Sgt Pepper is almost too solid of a recording, almost sterile with perfection, no loose groove (Day In The Life still kills!) . White Album is a fun pouporri of songs, Revolver is also great, Mystery Tour... on and on...

Brutha TD, that's some serious hero-worship :)

Do you think McCartney's later or more recent stuff is as good?

don't know it very well. I think Lennon and McCartney balanced each other out, neither of them made solo tunes on par with the Beatles, although Lennon's Imagine album is amazing (How Do You Sleep At Night is John ripping Paul a new asshole.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPQoSIZsMzM <--- amazing, dripping with inuendo. (the only thing you done was yesterday)

Wings has some good tunes but it suffers from the bubble gum doodley-bop that the singles Paul has put out in the 21st century.
