So is it just in parallels that midi controllers don't work in XP?

I am not too sure on this ine but Parallels yesterday did another update and there is suppose to be more improvement in the USB 2.0 area so if it is USB I should imagine the Midi interface will work... Firewire is not supported in Parallels yet so thats a definite no go.glu wrote:oooppss

* Vista is generally slower than XP, but it's better at multitasking on dual-core PCs.
* Your PC should have 1GB of RAM at the bare minimum.
* Aero won't slow you down if you use a discrete graphics processor and enough memory.
* Apps run slower on the 64-bit version of Vista, but adding RAM closes the gap.

What about VST's and VSTi's? I use Live a lot to host a bunch of VSTs with an m-Audio Firewire Solo interface on a dual core 2 gighz laptop. The laptop clearly says, "Vista Ready" on it but I don't want to upgrade if I'm going to have issues with virtual instruments and effects.
Frankly, interface is important to me and if Vista is easier to look at than XP's horrible look I'm all for it, especially if I can eek out a few extra % of processing power due to my dual core processor. Perhaps it might even look as good as my Duel G5 box.
thanks,
Mark

It is your audio interface you should be worried about. Check if M-Audio have Vista ready drivers. Everything else should work fine.
But seriously, you don't HAVE to upgrade. XP looks terrible, so I always switch inte "Classic" mode (right click on desktop, properties, Themes, "Windows Classic"). No eye candy, but not fugly either.
If you really care about eye candy, you can skin XP. Tons and tons of very good looking skins out there. Like this:

(Geeky, but shows how much you can customize plain old XP if you want)

1. It's only slower because the drivers are less mature. It's actually a lot more efficient code-wise
2. Natch
3. And if your drivers aren't shite, like the current nvidia ones
4. Absolute toss. 64-bit coded apps run 3-40% faster native. 32-bit apps have a 6% overhead to run in wow64.

Does anyone know how Rewire works in Vista? Someone was saying to me the other day..that a few people were having problems with it..I know Reason were dealing with it, but i haven't heard anyone mention Live/rewire issues yet?

Rewire has to be installed separately for Vista. You can get the latest download from the Propellerheads website.

Not that this really adds anything to this thread, but I am happy enough with XP. The trouble is that eventually everyone using Windows will eventually have to shift to Vista whether they like it or not particularly if you use internet. For machines that are for music making and no internet then you can stick with XP probably for years and years.
something tells me Vista's next service pack and Live 7 coupled with the new quad $ drops are going to be the time to upgrade hardware/software. I say Q3.
