Don't forget 128's half brother, absolute session automation is feeling neglected , just as annoying for me.

+1, this drives me MAD, i am an obsessive Guitar Rig user; and since it only has one built-in macro control i NEED more parameter automation!

I agree. This is a major limitation given the advancement of modern plugins. 128 parameters at a time is fine. However, we should be able to choose WHICH 128 parameters we would like to use for any given plugin.

For example, I love Amplitube 2 but I cannot map the wah pedal to anything because that particular parameter is just beyond the 128 mark. I think it's in the 160s or 170s.

Argh, c'mon Abes!!!

Without having read every post on this thread...

Has Ableton actually said why they haven't implemented either a greater number of automatable parameters or the option to choose which 128? If just about every other DAW has this option, for the life of me, I can't figure out why they wouldn't do this...

Edit: Ok, now I've read this and it seems they haven't. Give me a break -- I just bought a Novation Remote SL 25 and, as someone said earlier, it IS crippled by this silliness!

They have actually... last year or the year before that
.
Some VST's can have up to 10 000 parameters. Live currently cant handle to make them all available. Just make a Rack with a few hundred devices and then try to automate a parameter within the rack. You'll see how sluggish it is.

And as far as the Novation SL goes... the Novation SL is crippling Live, not the other way around.

Respectfully, I'm not sure I buy that -- if other DAWs don't have this limitation, there's no reason Live should.

As for the Novation Remote SL, there's nothing about it that cripples Live whatsoever -- it uses all of Live's functionality and, for me, pretty flawlessly. It's Live that doesn't use all of the Remote SL's...

Thanks to the automapping that Live has to support for almost every controller, there are further improvements for automapping beyond the capabilities of the remote SL.
So all the rest of us are screwed to get any more flexibility.

You don't have to buy the parameter limit reason. Just chuck 100 Arpeggiators in a Rack and automate a few parameters. You'll be lucky if Live still manages to play an audio clip. Hell, Live will almost freeze when trying to find a parameter from the enormous dropdown list. Believe me, I've tried. My first sequencer rack had close to 6000 devices. (it used 256 pitch plugins for each step, this was before the pitch plugin got improved.)
