How to Sync Computers ...

Post by Sonicavenger » Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:26 pm

Gonna be hosting a jam--both real instruments and laptops running Live and Serato--and I need to get hip to syncing the laptops so we're all locked into the same MIDI tempo. Any suggestions?

The night will start Sept. 6th at the Downtown Cafe in Red Bank, NJ @ 8:00.

Players:

Chris Buono (me) - guitar, sounds, LIVE
Tobias Ralph - drums, triggers
Steve Jenkins - bass

Guests TBA.

come down. This could be the seeds to the NJ User Group!

You'll need a midi thru box with a thru port for each computer. One of the computers will send out midi clock (to the in of the thru box),and will be considered the master. The other computers will be set to sync to the midi clock, be connected to the thru ports of the thru box, and will be considered slaves.

Good luck with your performance.

Be sure to test it roughly before going live, with all master/slaves online. There is good syncdrift chance in that kind of setup.

Now each computer will need a dedicated MIDI interface to be able to connect via DIN, correct?

If so, the "Thru Box" would link the computers by connecting MIDI cables from the interfaces to the box? So, say I was the master, how does this sound: from my interface I would MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN of the THRU Box, then use a THRU port to connect to the slave's MIDI IN. Then, use another THRU port to come back to master's MIDI IN (is that even necessary?)

Thanks so much!

every midi interface can handle the job.

you can also go that way

buy a multiple out midi interface and plug it to the master computer

send the signal to all midi outputs and slave everyone that way, this is imo a more robust solution since you avoid multiple signal repetitions from the midi thru.

So, this would be cool:

Master connects via USB, then use, say OUT A (found on the rear), to the slaves's MIDI IN on it's interface. This is also considering the apps are set for master an slave duties in their respective prefs.

Cool?

agreed. I would never show up to a gig and drop this w/o ample field testing

thanks so much ...
