How can I get the best quality video?

Post by brightonalex » Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:55 am

Hello - I'm exporting video, as an avi. Is there a better format? I've set quality to "best" but its still a bit fuzzy. thanks

avi is just a container, so it depends on the codec you choose not the file format.

what program are you using to export?
what are you going to be using it for - ie tv, web, etc ?

I'm doing something for work. I don't know what format they want it in - AVI I guess.
I just want the quality to be as good as possible when I export from Ableton Live.

I'm doing file, export audio/video, then exorting it.

Also, why does it save the audio file separately? I just want a video file, with my music over the top - all on one avi!! Argh!

do you have quicktime listed as a format option?

if so go into the settings and set the codec to animation at best quality. You will get 100% of the original quality of your video
Make sure you set the size to 'current'. And also make sure that you have sound ticked in the quicktime settings

animation will produce a massive file - just so you are warned but it is not lossy at all

Thanks I'll give it a go!
Even though I said "argh" Live has saved my life. I've never done video editing before and Windows Movie maker was driving me to tears.

I love you Ableton Live.

Porpy I tried Quicktime, on the "animation" setting with best quality - but its come out really distorted. The AVI version is grainy but still looks better.
Mayeb I should experiment with a different avi compresser to "cinepak"?

Sorry that its evident I don't know what I'm talking about.

I've fixed it! Export as AVI, with DVC Pro compressor selected.

Thanks, I will stop posting on this now.

Cheers Porpy - I'm not sure where I was going wrong with the quicktime version, but I'm happy with the version I have.
Thanks very much for your help!

cool. it got you experimenting and that's really what encoding video is about - thankfully ableton doesn't offer the dizzying (aka overwhelming to the uninitiated) array of possibilities that exists in dedicated video editing/encoding software

Its so intuitive to use. I'm going to see if I can trick work into signing off an upgrade for me from Live 7 to 8.
The orchestral collection would be even better but I don't think I'll be able to swing that unfortunately.
