NATIVE COMPATIBILITY WITH AFTERTOUCH!

Post by radicalcut » Thu Jun 26, 2008 10:42 am

In Live there's native compatibility with PB signal: why no aftertouch? Some keyboard controllers have the possibility to map a CC signal to key pressure (ok with live), but some others NO. It's a simple feature, it must be implemented.

Midi controllers such as Akai's MPD's have pressure control - aftertouch. There are freeware apps, such as midipipe, that can can convert cc to aftertouch so you can use pressure for a Live controller.

I agree aftertouch ability should be build into Live, since Live is all about being controlled by midi.

so, i downloaded midipipe but can't figure it out. i made a pipe and saved it but don't know what to do with it. do i save it in a folder in live somewhere? i don't even know if it worked. where can i get a pipe that translates my aftertouch?

OK, here's the way MidiPipe works with Live:

Have Live and MidiPipe both open.

In MidiPipe, drag from the left column to the right column:

1. Midi In. Select your controller, i.e. MPD24
2. Message Conventer. IN- Channel or Poly Aftertouch. OUT- i.e. CC7
3. Midi Out. MidiPipe output 1

In Live, go to midi preference, and enable MidiPipe Output 1

Now all aftertouch info will be changed to whatever CC you want, in my example CC7, volume.

I thought of this too, but

the limitation of doing this is that you'd have less say on what aftertouch will do with your presets and patches. The PB on the other hand natively works. Yes, both could be used to control any assortment of variables, but by assigning them to CC's we'd be restricting them to certain modulators which in the end and depending how you have things set up may or may not effect the sound. Am I making any sense?

as far as I know Live does record 'Channel Pressure' (aftertouch)
I guess you are referring to polyphonic aftertouch rather than 'channel' aftertouch.
polyphonic aftertouch is a lot more rare than just plain old aftertouch, or perhaps my controller keys are just outdated !

(edit - aha the novation controllers send poly-aftertouch)

sigh, I wish polyphonic aftertouch will be featured soon!

I landed on this forum as I was desperate about the lack of polyphonic after touch / poly key pressure support in live.
I was happy to read about midipipe... but mostly because it just got me started about featuring something like that in a max/MSP patch I use to process midi from my MPD24 before it gets to live.
It is not a tragedy if you can manage to change PKP's into CC's but I totally agree with those who are still complaining about this lack in our beloved software.
this conversion gives you the chance of using PKP's (which is a great improvement of performance) but since CC's are only 127 if you take some out to assign them to PKP the number of CC's to assign to knobs, faders etc. necessarily decrease.
moreover as someone has pointed out if you are midi-chaining some hardware on which you don't have many chances of midi-routing the risk is to override some universally registered CC's such as Volume, Expression, Portamento Time, etc.
so, in conclusion, it remains absolutely necessary to feature Poly Key Pressure in Ableton Live! :)

We want MIDI Poly Pressure !!!

I have reKon Audio VST Lead2 Editor for PC (www.rekonaudio.com), and I can't use it because Live is not sending MIDI Poly Pressure messages from a VST correctly.

Ableton, give us MIDI Poly Pressure !!!

+1

I've payed a lot of money for a 88 key poly aftertouch keyboard and now Ableton Live doesn't seem to support it.

That is sad! Please add support for this!
