recommend soundcard/interface

Hi All,
I've been having latency issues when i get a large project going. Trying to record midi but it's recording up to 16th late. I've read lots on the subject and its been suggested i direct monitor. thing is i'm using a M-audio audiophile delta 2496 pci card which only has one pair of stereo outs. I'm thinking of changing to a firewire interface which will give me more control over the levels and monitoring etc. at the moment i'm only making sample&synth based house tracks but i would like in the future to record some stuff with a mic.

Can anyone recommend a reliable system for use with a PC, XP and PCI-X ? I have a firewire card installed but at the moment it is disabled because i'm not using it.

holy shit a 16th late!
are you using a software compressor with lookahead on your input channel?

because no kind of modern soundcard should produce latency like that, are you using the right asio drivers?
I don't have experience with the specific m-audio card, but that sounds like something wrong there.

yes i have the latest drivers and midi keyboard plugged direct into the midi in (not USB). It doesn't happen when monitoring is switched to "off" in Ableton.
