If you're thinking about upgrading from XP to Vista, my advice would be don't bother. I have a MSDN universal subscription through work and Vista was available on that from the end of last November. After a couple of months testing it, it's nothing more than XP in a new frock that performs slightly worse. And as for UAC, that will drive you nuts until you eventually decide to switch it off. We have an Microsoft support guy at work who, when pushed, admitted that it really doesn't offer anything new, other than a few bells and whistles here and there.

The real question is running Live in native 64 bit and with buckets of ram. The big advantage is beating the 3/3.5 gb barrier. Core 2 Duos should really shine. I wouldn't switch to Vista just to run Live 32 bit.

My $0.02
Live 8.4.2 / Win 8 Pro 64 bit / Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHZ / 8 Gb ram
Presonus Firepod / Axiom 49 / PadKontrol
Various guitars, keyboards, sax and friends

Is that the plan with the next major release of Live? 64-bit? I'd be very surprised if it were as refactoring and recompiling into 64-bit requires development time and thorough testing. Or have I missed the point of your $0.02? :?

Well OS X is already running 64-bit code, right? So why not more 64-bit apps? Sonar is among the few...

I've no doubt Live will eventually become 64-bit, but it could be a year or two before you see that. Back to the OS, if you want 64-bit, I would go for XP 64-bit until Vista has bedded down for a year or two - I've got nothing against Vista in principle, but it just felt a bit bloated and unstable to me.

Listen all. There is no need for musicians and producers to switch to Vista unless you are a Microsoft enthusiast. XP 64bit will be just what you need until 2009 when Microsoft Vienna takes the shine away from Vista. Lets not forget that Vista is really mean to be the ultimate home entertainment PC. The business version justs adds more security remote capabilities. XP still runs better. I posted the benchmark comparisons between XP and Vista somewhere here. Do a search at Anandtech.com

:!: Humm... :!:

I try vista and I got some problem with the graphic engine too.

I have a EMU 1820m and the old drivers seem to be stable, I have also the ProjectMix of M-audio and no drivers is ready at all. The people don't remember that maybe but, all need to be adapted for a new OS before is the time to work with. ;-)

Me for fun, I installed It in dual boot and i wait for driver

See ya!

Yeah, totally agree - interestingly this month's Computer Music's cover feature is Vista, gonna have a read now and see what they say.

Computer Music's bottom line...

No real advantage for musicians with Vista yet, stick with XP for now.

You do realize that 2009 in Microsoft speak means 2012 in the real world, right?

I agree, but XP 64bit in NOW! All musicians should be concerned with switching from XP 32bit to 64bit. Thats all. VISTA SHOULD BE NO WHERE IN THE PICTURE unless you are an enthusiast (people with the "must have it now" syndrome).

Every IT guy will tell you and a bit of common sense and research will show you as well that Early adopters of anything new in the PC industry will have issues.
Be it software or hardware, The first iPods or the first Intel Macs. Let someone else suffer the pain or if you want USE A SECOND PC OR HARD DRIVE for Vista
Leave all your day to day stuff alone
Thats what I did when I bought a Mac after 20 years of PC"S eventually I shifted over but I would have been nuts to jump in with something new for me let alone the new Intel Macs. I have Vista and XP and OSX on a MAcbookPRo cause I love to play but when it somes time to being paid I waited till everything was 100% solid and I had proved it by my own usage. Vista is now going out to zillions of people the drivers manufacterers are way behine and there are plenty of reports of little compatibility issues all over the place exactly the same as there was as the release of XP or any other new OS (MS Apple or Linux)
Save your money, your hair and your sanity.. sure have a play if you want but if you are serious about your music.. wait... why be distracted by learning something new along with all the little niggles you will find. Go make some music (now where is my old 4 track tape deck like the Beatles used.)
MacbookPro Core2Duo 17" 160 gb SATA 2gb ram.

1 Terabyte External Drive
Presonus Firebox

A little off topic, but even Visual Studio 2005 has compatibility issues with Vista and that is Microsoft's flagship development environment!

Why? I'm not concerned with any of it. I likes my XP as it is. If it ain't broke...
