EIC and simpler. Trying to put a square peg in a round hole?

Post by littlepig » Mon Jul 17, 2006 12:13 pm

OK - I've read the announcement stuff and the similar topics on the forum but it seems to me that using the essential instrument collection (EIC) with simpler is like trying to stuff a square peg into a round hole.

EIC is multi-sampled and simpler just loads one sample at a time. Yet Ableton claim
Using Ableton's Simpler instrument, which is included with Live 6, the Essential Instrument Collection is ready to play right out of the box.
It seems to me that you will get a very pale imitation of what the mutli samlper will do....

BTW this isn't just a theoretical question, the EIC looks very useful to me since I don't have a sampler. It's just that $100 for EIC the $199 for Sampler is starting to look a bit expensive.

I am I correct or have I missed something here?

Hi littlepig,

the idea is to provide even those who do not want to buy the Sampler with the full library. So Simpler turns into a ROM playback module but you still have access to LFO,Filter etc....
If you just need a good piano or want to import a multisample from an external library you can do this with Simpler. With Sampler you get the capability to create your own multisamples and you get extended ways to sculpt your sounds.

So Robert,
What you are saying is that Simpler has been improved to incorporate multi-samples? Or did it always and I never knew that?

Thanks.

what seems to be said in a number of places is what Robert said here -

Simpler can duplicate the PLAYBACK abilities of Sampler in Live 6.

you don't get any new CREATION abilities in simpler, but you can play back all the complicated patches from Sampler and also which other users might make.

Simpler becomes a Rompler - a playback version of Sampler.

at least thats how I have understood it.

yes and no.

it cannot playback all the complex modulations since it does not have 3 lfos and the envelope and the FM oscillator etc. but it can play back multisamples now.

I think Robert made a small typo...
To my knowledge, Simpler cannot load imported third-party multisamples.
Simpler can only load munltisamples from the EIC library.

sounds like a good idea - nice way of keeping ppl happy

but TBH by 2006 I think I've had enough of samples

Okay, Simpler acts as a Rompler with multisample soundsets? So i still will only be able to make a single sample based custom soundset with simpler, or can i make multisamples with it now?

from what I gather, you can use the new Rack system to host as many simplers as you need to fulfill your multi-sample purposes

the rack system will allow you to map each midi note to whatever simpler you want it sent to....hey-presto multisampling...

right ?

Goody. And if they include these rack presets for multisampling... It would make it even easier... could hold me over until I decide whether to invest in sampler or not... looks hard to resist for too long though, wait and see how it goes i guess.

Ok. So Simpler won't be able to load multisamples from the Puremagnetik libraries?

Last night I was playing with the Sampler demo and I thought that it was pretty
impressive the way you can easily get interesting new sounds out of your samples so come pay day I may buy it after all!
