Just replaced by 5400 internal HD to 7200!

After reading this post i'm thinking of replacing my iBook 12" G4 hard drive. Where wouldi be able to find a replacement?

what used to be 3 hours on my powerbook changed to about 2.5, but my battery is due for a replacement (currently lasts 25min!). it's had an exponential curve on it's overall life just in the past 2 months. apart from MY battery though, it's probably more like a 20min loss? a friend of mine had something like that, i think, and i know her battery is in much better condition.

Actually I don't think macs or pcs report what speed the HD is... you'd have to figure this out from performance tests I guess...

The best way would be to open the hard drive compartment and check, as the manufacturer sometimes lies when they ship hardware. Look for like a 4200, 5400, 7200 or something like that. If you find out the drive model number and manufacturer you could also check their website for specs too.

I say again there is no performance increase because ableton live cant work with many audio tracks. In other softwares maybe? depend on how optimised the software.

Really? I've run 20+ audio tracks at the same time... and heard of people doing much higher. The faster your drive the more tracks you can use and the smoother it will be.

I'm just curious just how many tracks you think is a big deal...

As I type this I am playing 50 drum loops simultaneously on 50 tracks. There is no glitching.
Each drumloop is a different file. They are all at 120bpm originally and I am playing them at 130bpm, so Live is fully warping each clip as well.

This is on an 800Mhz Titanium Powerbook G4 under OSX Tiger with Live 5.02 thru the internal soundcard with a 5400rpm internal HD and 1Gb of ram.

While this is not a usual everyday scenario for how I would use Live, It is an example of what IS possible. Remember performance on Macs is a lot less than PC for Live, and this Mac is half the Mhz of the current G4 models.

Dude, are you just trolling? Please stop posting unsubstantiated dis-information!

If you are getting lousy performance, post some details of your setup to the forum and someone will try to help you out.

I stuck a 7k60 in my 1.33Ghz 12" iBook a few months back... it increased loading speed etc slightly, but the most noticeable effect was battery time, it went from about 4:00-4:30 for say web browsing down to about 3:00. The idle power usage of that drive is higher then the 5400s. This means that you'll notice lower battery performance when doing non-HDD intensive stuff, but when you are doing high-HDD stuff you notice very little difference.

Also, the 7k60 has a noticeable whirring/whining sound that you'll notice in a very quiet room (I often work in very quiet rooms, so I definitely did notice it).

In the end I swapped it back out for a 80GB 5400rpm WD Scorpio.

I have heard that the newer Seagate 7200rpm drives are quieter, and better in the power usage department. Who knows how good they'll prove to be in the performance department.

There is many document on internet when changed hard drive for faster one in laptops. The improve is small and VERY SMALL IN ABLETON. tests are on the net to prove this cases so go and read them so you dont need to lie about 50 drumloops
