hi,
bought it yesterday and it's not that special.
was expecting more tricks and indeep view behind the surface of the live interface. good for starters.
it shows also how different someone can utilise it, see tutorial for dj-ing with live.
this copy will sell to the max, i guess.
the tutorials arefull with screenshots of live but on them no precise indication of what's happening( no mouse pointer or highlights) .
i like the piece where the show the people behind the program and their workspace.
perhaps the included cd got something interresting. i did'nt checked it yet.
stay tuned.
undaria.

i dont know about that....
i still know fuck all about production, and still refuse to buy it. its weak.
50% of it is usually the same as the month before. waste of money.

The Essential Guide to Ableton Live--in U.S. yet?
I've looked in the biggest bookstores, music stores, and have yet to find a copy of this special publication. Is it distributed only in the UK or is it somewhere in the States? Thanks!

You're not missing anything, dude. I skimmed through it in the bookstore here in the UK. It's useless.adfish wrote:I've looked in the biggest bookstores, music stores, and have yet to find a copy of this special publication. Is it distributed only in the UK or is it somewhere in the States? Thanks!
You'll garner far more info from the manual and here on the forum. If you really want to learn, check out the outstanding 'Ableton Live Power!' book.

The CM guide to Cubase was great - lots of key strokes, things you can do blah blah blah
I've always been hesitant to buy books about Ableton because it's all kind of right there in front of you you know, or just ask a question n the forum, get called a fag and someone will answer your question.
Here's a ableton tutorial, ready, ok
Record some beats in, loop them and arrange them
drag a vst /au over to a empty space and draw some notes in then arrange those
When you're done bounce it down to audio
the thing these tutorials don't give you is talent (doh)
these how to DJ books are like duh - set up 2 or 3 tracks next to each other and mix - that's not hard, a essential guide is not necessary
but then if you're new to the game of Ableton it's always worth the read
I actually don't own any CM's that featured Ableton - don't know why, but those Mags are expensive $15.00 in the good 'ole US of A!

they're $15 bucks cuz they include a dvd full of samples and free software.
that's worth my bucks right there.
haven't read the ableton issue so i can't vouch for that one, but as a newb to production a stack of a friend's back issues really did help me out learning what i needed to know.

Well I enjoyed the magazine.
Sure, most of the tutorials are fairly basic, but because they cover different aspects of using Live - some of which I have personally explored more than others - I still picked up a few tips from reading through them.
More importantly, because I teach students Ableton Live reading easy to follow tutorials gives me good ideas and material to help me communicate the programme effectively to students.
The CDROM is also good - the M-Audio Pro-Sessions samples are useful, but the TrackTeam Audio LiveFill bundle "Lite" is worth the price of the magazine alone.

I believe it is coming out in the States at the end of December.adfish wrote:I've looked in the biggest bookstores, music stores, and have yet to find a copy of this special publication. Is it distributed only in the UK or is it somewhere in the States? Thanks!

If regular posters get bored of answering the same basic questions that people new to the software post here 20 times a day wish they could point to something that lays it all out clearly, then that CM special is just the thing, and the TrackTeam input is really an asset. I wish I'd had it available when I was trying to pick up the basics.
These magazines are like candy. They make me feel cool because I know most of the stuff in them, and then every now and then I learn something new, if not a technique a perspective. I would have to say though that I expect this will be best for serioous beginners alone.
I really like some of their articles on production, since I am quite new at this. ESpecially when they involve comparisons or switching of applications at different stages. It's really all just porn though. Oh my god... did they really connect moog to that to huge...

this reminds me of my realization that gear/software catalogs are the new porn...LOFA wrote:

thanks for the info on Ableton Live 5 Power book.hambone1 wrote:adfish wrote:I've looked in the biggest bookstores, music stores, and have yet to find a copy of this special publication. Is it distributed only in the UK or is it somewhere in the States? Thanks!
Its almost the 1st of January and the Dec. 1st special edition issue is not even on the shelves in the States. Basically, I was told to check back everyday since its from UK they have no definitive "on the shelf" date.

I will order these from Amazon. I have no knowledge whatsoever of Live. so any bit of knowledge helps. [/url]
