1. That's because midi instruments don't have a midi fader for volume in real life either. But you could assign midi controller number 7 to the mackie. Did I read somewhere that if you only use native ableton live effects in an effects rack that those not in use will not eat up cpu (and/or memory?), whereas an effects rack containing non-native vsts will continue to use cpu (and/or memory).
