You will need a MIDI-CV converter, yes. The MIDI-CV converter should have at a Gate out and a CV out. Big up for posting this, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the original post about the Live python API. http://sonictransfer.com/ableton-live-mixing-utility-plugin.shtml This article describes using the utility plugin (gain) to draw in volume envelopes so that the volume fader stays moveable. Sounds like a good idea. Anybody doing this? Pitfalls? yes I never automate channel volume. no pitfalls afaik
