The ESX is the best though, you get a factory soundset and can change it any time... Sample management is kind of a pain though. You have to use outdated SmartMedia cards to load samples and you can't see the waveforms on the screen at all, which makes editing, looping etc tricky. I'd love to see t...

The EMX is a great machine, capable of a wide variety of sounds. In its price range I don't think anything else comes close.

I prefer Live for the midi plugins *alone*. Sure, you could cook up almost any equivalent in the environment, but, let's face it, you're not going to.

Actually, it appears that what happens is that Live doesn't load the adv file at all until I switch to another app, then switch focus back to Live. I'm seeing this on a Mac and a PC.

It's called "retrigger" That's not oscillator sync, that's just restarting the phase of the oscillator on note on. Oscillator sync syncs the phase of one oscillator to another and is a great source of all kinds of sharp, metallic sounds. Try the sync function in Ableton's Analog synth if ...

Where? I don't see it in the UI.

You may need to turn Live's priority to "Realtime" either with or without Aero still. Else you may suffer from less performance (dropouts). Doesn't seem to be the case here. I racked up operators well past 70% usage last night without any glitches, which is not something I could say for m...

No oscillator sync. No FM. No ringmod. PWM requires complicated A/B phasing tweaks. *This* is supposed to be a general-purpose VA? No thanks.

The basic sound is good but there's no way this is a Virus replacement unless you only use about 30% of the features of the Virus.

I'm finding Vista to be totally fine on my new Dell XPS 1530. I turned off Aero glass and overall it doesn't feel much different than XP to me.

I certainly don't see any reason to pay twice as much for a comparable Mac.

Just to follow up here: The 1530 seems like a great Live machine, even running Vista. I had to turn off a bunch of devices and services but that's good practice anyway. The wireless NIC causes the occasional glitch so I leave it off. I'm having a hard time seeing why you'd spend almost twice as much...

The key to making operator interesting is to add appropriate effects and automate it. It has a great raw sound but it needs some dressing and a little movement to bring it to life.

That said, I would like to see the kind of midi controls that Sampler has brought to Operator.

loading .adv files into sampler takes a *long* time

Loading an adv file into sampler, even a small one like "Brass Attack.adv" takes a very long time to register. Sampler won't respond to notes for quite a while after loading a file like this.

I just confirmed this morning that Live runs ok on my bootcamp vista partition *if* Aero is enabled. Otherwise the ui becomes very very sluggish. I guess that confirms what other people have posted here although it sounds like this isn't completely universal. Live 7.0.12 Beta seems to finally fix t...

I sometimes feel hostage to Apple and Microsoft's agendas too. It's obvious they both care a lot more about sucking up to the RIAA and the MPAA than they do about empowering their creative users.

I think about switching to Linux sometimes. Maybe if I get more comfortable in Renoise I'll do it.
