You need AutoHotkeys and it´s NiftyWindows script. This will allow you to manipulate windows in all sorts of ways including transparency.

I keep trying to like Max but can´t. Everything I´ve seen for Max seems like a hard way to do what Nicfit has already programmed into a vst. Is there a Max patch for Live that would blow away the doubts?

I'm traveling at the moment so don't have my DAW in front of me, but from memory, create a MIDI track with an External Instrument. Route it's output to an audio track and select External Instrument and 3/4 as the audio tracks inputs. Be careful with your levels as its very easy to get feedback.
