what randomization does minimonsta have It uses the same system as Symptohm. It's all controlled from a midi keyboard and you can mutate everything to varying degrees or select groups of parameters. You can also undo and commit via midi keys. Pretty slick and a great way of coming up with new sound...

but there are some things third party plugins do that you'd have a hard time replicating. Such as? Quality analog-style filters like Fabfilter Volcano. Ring modulation and comb filtering. Wavetable synthesis (although you can do similar things with Sampler). Interesting randomizers like Synplant or...

You can do a *lot* with what comes in the box but there are some things third party plugins do that you'd have a hard time replicating. Honestly though, if you're happy with the results you're getting then you might be better off ignoring the rest. You can waste a lot of time and money chasing the n...

Also, I like the fact that the raw sounds are great for adding effects. This is a perfect tool at the base of a massive rack generating cool sounds that work great with effects on top. This is an important point. The patches aren't doused in a rack of effects like a lot of other synths so you're go...

Download the demo and flip through the presets. There are plenty of great bass & lead sounds as well as a lot of interesting weirdness.

general rule of thumb for me: 1. generate new seeds until you get something somewhere within the ballpark you want to work with 2. Edit DNA to get the synth sound you like (editing its DNA is like typical synth editing) Interesting. I dislike the DNA page enough that I avoid it until the very end, ...

The light didn't really come on for me until I tried for a couple of days to actually write music with it. Don't try to use it like a conventional synth - just let it lead you a bit.

Yeah. It's amazing how little CPU this thing eats. Even in the beta stages this thing was also 100% stable and bug free. Microtonic and Malstrom were brilliant but this thing is a masterpiece.

Good move. I wish I'd done it sooner. One word of warning - I've found a lot of plugins to be a little shaky on Leopard, particularly the NI stuff. I think a lot of the third party au/vst vendors have been scrambling a bit to keep up with the platform changes. There are many that have been 100% soli...

People said that ten years ago when the first soft synths that sounded even halfway decent came out. They said it 20 years ago when FM synthesis hit. Don't get em wrong I like soft syths too, but ones emulating analog hardware just don't do it for me, and probably never will. Moore's law is on the ...

In five or ten years software will be so much more powerful and sophisticated that almost all hardware will be museum pieces.

the case for improving's live's plugins

I used to be one of those people that criticized Ableton for spending too much time on the native effects and instruments at the expense of adding core functionality. I've seen the light on this one though and I really hope we'll see a lot of work go into these in version 8. Having first-rate plugin...
