Dr. David Casal (Hull)

David's research focuses on building music systems for improvisation. He has performed in several European venues, including IRCAM, the Sonic Arts Research Center in Belfast, the Musica Viva Festival in Lisbon and several London venues, including Ray's Jazz Cafe, the Shunt Vaults, and King's Place. He creates artificial agents that mediate between an improviser and her unconscious mind. He has recently given papers and performances at the ICMC2007 in Copenhagen, the European Conference on Artificial Life, the Darwin Symposium and ICMC08 in Belfast. His teaching focuses on software and hardware practices for sonic art and live improvisation. He completed a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition at the University of East Anglia under the supervision of Dr. Simon Waters and Dr. Jonathan Impett. In a parallel life, David produces dubstep/glitchstep/breakstep and spaced-out electronica as Subplan, Tantamount and other aliases. He is a certified trainer for both Apple and Ableton and likes to teach the confluence of dataflow (Max/MSP) and OO programming (Supercollider, C++) with applications such as Logic and Live.
