Phelan Kane

Phelan Kane is a Berlin- and London-based music producer, engineer, artist, developer and educator. For over 27 years he has been active in both the music industry and the contemporary music education sector, with a focus on electronic music and alternative bands. His specialism is sound design and production techniques such as synthesis and sampling, alongside audio engineering, mixing, mastering, audio processing and plug-in development.

He has worked with artists and labels as diverse as Placebo, Radiohead, Fad Gadget, Depeche Mode, Moby, Snow Patrol, Mute, Sony BMG, Universal, EMI and Warner Bros. In 2006 he completed an MA in Audio Technology from the London College of Music, University of West London, and in 2008 became one of the first wave of Ableton Certified Trainers in the world. In 2016 he completed an MSc in Sound & Music Computing at the Center for Digital Music at Queen Mary, University of London. For over 20 years, Phelan has been teaching aspects of music production and music technology at higher education level. He has engaged in curriculum development and design, being the lead architect for six undergraduate and four post-graduate music related degrees. He has regularly been delivering lectures, workshops and teaching online via a myriad of platforms such as Adobe Connect, GotoMeeting and Zoom. He was an active member of the UK’s Music Producers Guild, holds a PGCert in Learning & Teaching, is an Affiliate of the Institute for Learning, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and from 2017-2019 he was Chairman of the London Committee for the British Section of the Audio Engineering Society. In 2021 he became one of the first wave of Max Certified Trainers in the world and the only one outside the US. Phelan owns a very (un)healthy collection of audio hardware and software toys and has an obsession with synthesis, owning many vintage analog synthesizers such as modular systems, Moogs, ARPs and Oberheims. He currently runs the audio software development company Meta Function, which specializes in Max for Live devices and plug-ins, and releases the M4L synth Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.
