Grid Culture

  • Singapore Singapore

Grid Culture was originally founded in 2019 by Syafiq Halid, Singapore’s first Ableton Certified Trainer. Starting with a humble studio in the outskirts of Singapore, Syafiq gradually built a large following through his one-to-one teaching sessions. Through word-of-mouth, Grid Culture soon became a music production school known for its unique project-centric teaching approach, which encouraged students to take ownership of their learning.

In 2020, Jaye came onboard as a co-founder after reuniting with Syafiq years after their first encounter at The Parlour Singapore. The two immediately discovered a perfect alignment in their teaching philosophies and vision, which swiftly led to their partnership. With the joint aspiration of empowering local creators and performers, Syafiq and Jaye then decided to turn Grid Culture into Singapore’s first Ableton Certified Training Centre.

Strongly believing that a musical background is not a must for music production, Syafiq and Jaye strive to eliminate these self-limiting stereotypes and further encourage more enthusiasts to delve into the technology of music-making. At the same time, the pair wishes to leverage the school as a platform to promote and grow the local community of electronic music makers.

Designed to educate the masses on Ableton Live as a production and performance tool, Grid Culture’s courses are constantly revised to remain relevant for both beginners and experienced creators. The team recognises that hectic lifestyles could make learning commitments challenging – hence, the flexible lesson options of one-to-one tutoring, group classes and online lessons, depending on preference.

Diverging from traditional music teaching styles, Grid Culture’s experienced trainers teach through experimentation and exploration. Students are encouraged to use their personal music projects as lesson material, as the team believes that it would provoke a more independent and inquisitive learning attitude. Lessons are also customised according to the students’ proficiency level, in order to provide a comfortable learning pace.

Grid Culture offers a variety of courses that equip students with creative techniques such as Electronic Music Composition and Arrangement, Beat-making and Music Production with Ableton Live. Students can also delve into the software’s performance potential through the Performing Live course, or learn how to polish their sounds with the Mixing and Mastering course.
