Garth Futcher aka Futch is a music producer, audio engineer, educator and artist who produces ambient dub techno under the alias Dystopian Soundscapes. He specializes in teaching Intro to Ableton Live, Intro to Ableton Push and Intro to Max For Live for beginner and intermediate level students.
- Vancouver BC Canada
After high school, Futch followed the lead of some friends and enrolled in an audio engineering course where he learned the art of recording on a Neve console. He became addicted to working in studios when he discovered how to send and return instruments to delays and reverbs. In the mid-90s he co-founded a live electronic/organic band and developed an obsession with synths and drum machines.
Futch has taught music production and audio engineering at Vancouver recording schools since 1994 and Ableton Live since 2016. He has produced, engineered and mixed albums for a variety of artists, including The Be Good Tanyas (Blue Horse) and Fences (Fences).
Ableton Live is the perfect hybrid of the signal flow found in a recording studio, merged with the synths and sequencers that drive Futch’s sonic passion. He can simplify and communicate audio concepts and Live workflows for beginners so that they can start to program beats and sketch out song ideas quickly. This is a testament to Live’s intuitive simplicity and the fact that everyone ends up adapting their own unique workflow demonstrates its vast creative potential.
Futch is the Curriculum Development Manager and Music Production Instructor at Nimbus School of Recording & Media in Vancouver. Nimbus offers Intro to Ableton Live weekend workshops and Futch is currently designing online courses for Nimbus, including an Intro to Ableton Live course. As Dystopian Soundscapes, Futch has released tracks and EP’s with various dub techno labels around the world.
