Max for Live
1. Download and install the Max 5 demo and the latest version of Live (8.1 or greater) from 'Your Downloads'
If you own Max 6, you can use it as your Max for Live editor. If you do not own Max 6, then you will need to either use Max 5 as your editor or purchase Max 6.
Some Max for Live devices stop working after using "Collect All and Save".
If you have a Max 6 license and a Max for Live license, you can use the latest version of Max 6 as your Max for Live device editor in Live 8.
You need the full version of Ableton Live 8 or Ableton Suite 8. If you already own a Max/MSP 5 or 6 license, Max for Live is available for a discounted price.

You basically get full Max/MSP/Jitter functionality inside Ableton Live. Audio and MIDI I/O is handled exclusively by Ableton Live. Stand-alone use of Max for Live components is not possible.
Certain aspects of Ableton Live's functionality are limited when using Ableton Transport Control, and may behave in unexpected ways.
Clicking the 'Edit' button of a Max for Live device opens Max, but not the Editor/Patcher window.
