How to access hidden folders on Windows and Mac OSX

Windows XP:

To make the Application Data folder visible on Windows XP, do the following:

  1. Launch Explorer.
  2. Select Tools/Folder Options/View.
  3. Check “Show hidden files and folders.”

Windows Vista and Windows 7:

To make the AppData folder visible on Windows Vista or Windows 7, do the following:

  1. Launch the Windows Explorer.
  2. Click on 'Organize' → 'Folder and Search Options' → 'View'.
  3. Check 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Windows 8:

Here's one way to make the AppData folder visible:

  1. Via Settings, open the Control Panel.
  2. Select the 'Folder Options'.
  3. Show the 'View' tab.
  4. Check 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'.

Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” and above:

  • To make 'Macintosh HD:/Users/[username]/Library' visible on Lion or above, press and hold the “option/alt” key, and you can choose “Go to Library” in the Go menu of the Finder.
  • To access the top level of Macintosh HD on Lion or above open ‘Finder Preferences’, select / check ‘Hard disks’ on ‘Sidebar’ tab under ‘Devices’ section.
