To get started with Live, we recommend downloading and installing the latest update. You can find the latest update for your version of Live in Your User Account.
Mac: When the download of 'ableton_live_xxx.dmg' is complete, double-click on that file and a mounted disk named 'Ableton Live xxx' will appear on your desktop and open automatically. As shown, drag the application named 'Ableton Live x' over to your hard disk - the recommended place is the Applications folder at the root of your Mac OS X drive. After this, you can drag the mounted disk and the dmg file to trash.
Windows: Please unpack the downloaded zip file first - it contains a Setup.msi file. Double-click this file to install Live.
When starting Live for the first time, you'll see an authorization dialog.
Authorizing online is the easiest way to authorize, as Live connects directly to the Ableton server and authorizes automatically. To authorize online, you will need internet access for the computer on which you have installed Live. You will be guided through the authorization process by Live.
If you'd prefer to authorize offline or would like additional information, step-by-step instructions are available.
Installing additional sounds
If you've purchased a boxed version of Live, it may have come with additional discs containing Live Packs. Once Live is installed, you can install these Live Packs, which will add additional sounds, presets and other content to Live's library.
You can also find additional Live Packs (both free and for sale) in Ableton's online Pack store.
Live Packs can be installed by dragging them from your computer and dropping them anywhere in Live.
Note: Some Live Packs require add-ons or devices which are not included in all versions of Live.
To learn more about using Ableton Live, we recommend watching our series of Getting Started tutorials. Live also comes with a series of built-in interactive lessons, which are available in Live's Help View. The Help View can be opened via Live's Help Menu.
