Getting a vintage gear sound

Modern sampling allows for higher sample rates and bit depths, plus sampling time that is virtually unlimited. While this flexibility has many advantages, there's an undeniable character to the sound of classic samplers, like the MPC60 or SP1200.

In a new tutorial, our friends at Loopmasters' Loopblog discuss methods for getting sounds similar to those classic samplers. Ableton Live comes with the tools you'll need to try out these tips - including Warping for speeding up and then slowing down a sample, Utility for sampling to mono (set the "stereo" parameter to 0%), and Redux for bit-reducing your sounds (many earlier samples sampled to 12-bit, rather than the modern standards of 16-bit or higher).
