Installation of Live pack fails (file.xxx could not be renamed)

  • Live-Versionen: 5 - 9
  • Betriebssysteme: WIN

Symptom

The installation of one or several Live Packs fails with the message “The folder or file path/file.xxx could not be renamed to path/file.xxx”

Reason

The name of the installation path is too long. On some systems (e.g. Windows XP) the installation path is limited to 255 characters.

Solution

If you are using Live 8 or older versions, change the Library location to a top-level folder of the hard drive in Live's Preferences → Library tab → “Change Location”.

Since Live 9 can actually handle Pack installations spread across several locations, you have two possibilities to fix this: 1) generally changing the Factory Packs location for your currently installed Packs and for future ones, or 2) putting only the problematic Pack to an extra place.

1)

  • In Live’s Preferences’ Library tab, change the current location and select a top-level place for your Packs with a shorter path.
  • You are now asked if you want to move your already installed Packs to the new location as well.
  • Confirm this question.
  • Now the Packs are moved.
  • Afterwards, you can install the desired Pack.

All Packs are now installed in the new location.

2)

  • In Live’s Preferences’ Library tab, change the current location and select a top-level place for your Packs with a shorter path.
  • You are now asked if you want to move your already installed Packs to the new location as well.
  • Deny this question.
  • The location gets changed for future Pack installations, but your currently installed Packs are kept at their current place, and Live still sees and uses them.
  • Install the desired Pack, which is now installed to the new location.
  • In Live’s Preferences’ Library tab, change the current location and select the previous location again.
  • You are again asked if you want to move your already installed Packs to the new location as well.
  • Deny this question again.
  • The location is now set back to your previous one, where all other packs were installed.

All old and future packs are now installed to this initial location again. Only the one problematic Pack is installed at the special place with the shorter path.
