what is a good setup for a live performance with synced video?

hey, guys.

i'm producing / creating a live presentation in which I use a video track (already rendered, not generated live) in sync with the audio that is controlled by ableton live. this is a small video of what I did:

as it is just one 38 minute long video, in my current setup I put the video file in live to be in sync and put it in full screen. it is a dual screen projection, so I use a matrox to split the signal.

the problem is that the quality of the video is limited. everything is running out of one computer, and I can't use really large files - the computer can't handle it. and now I want to work with three full hd projections with higher quality.

I was thinking about using four different computers (one for audio and three for the projections, one for each screen), but I don't know how to sync them properly. maybe sending midi clock from live through lan to other systems that can play a video in sync with midi clock. is there a software that can do it?

any suggestions?

I would separate the two and use a dedicated laptop for video, you can then simply control the second laptop using MIDI information sent from your DAW. If you use a mac it's easy to use the core MIDI and connect via network. There are a lot of VJ applications which allow you to map midi devices to control them, look at modul8 for example. If you own maxforlive  you could use that instead.

Modul8 will allow you to run multiple projectors from a single laptop provided you have a monitor splitter.

recently i have been working on a live set involving visuals.
were both max users, so i use max for live and feeding the channels transient values through a wired network. this then goes to my friends computer too a custom max/jitter visual patch.
it reads the data from the channels to separate visuals which are affected.

heres my two easy patches which i made and use to send data through a network.

    enjoy.

You may have a look to this toolset for Max for Live which I use and develope:

    http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=594

    http://fabriziopoce.com/max.html

Basically it is a modula toolset for using Jitter advanced features (inclusive OpenGL) within Ableton Live. You can use this to run footage playback in sync running your setup on the same liveset (if your system can cope with that) or on separate systems in sync via MIDI or OSC.

    Here a tutorial video: http://vimeo.com/33503662

    Cheers

    Fabrizio
