Phantom power on, but mics won't pic up anything

I'm using a scarlett 18i20 interface. I plugged in a MXL 603S condenser mic into inputs one and two. I have monitoring headphones in my first output. I can hear the test tone fine in my monitoring headphones, but my mics won't pic up anything I try to record. My phantom power is on and is set for the right inputs. Am I doing something wrong with my input configuration? I have it set for 1(mono) & 2(mono) 1/2 (stereo)

My mics will pick up sounds when I use MME/DirectX as my driver, but everything I try to record ends up having a lot of distortion

It picks up 'sometimes' the signal' but that's all.

Have you checked the levels on the Focusrite MixControl software - maybe the input has accidentally been turned down on there. I've a condenser mic myself and wasn't getting much volume on my Scarlett 8i6 until I noticed I hadn't set the levels up correctly on the MixControl application

Ah no, sorry, didn't realise it was only for certain Scarlett devices - http://us.focusrite.com/answerbase/can-scarlett-mixcontrol-work-with-the-2i4
